A rig turning steel is the most ordinary sight on a working bench. It is also the operation where sloppiness stays hidden longest.
Nobody notices a collar set a metre from where it was pegged, or steel that wandered two degrees off plumb. The evidence turns up later and somewhere else: boulders the jaw cannot swallow, a toe left standing after the shot, stone thrown past the line it was meant to stop at. The explosive has already been paid for by then.
Ten machines, high-pressure air behind every one of them, and a drill log that comes back with the shift. The pattern is a drawing we answer to, not a rough guide.
What we bring to the site

Ten machines, compressor-backed
Percussion and rotary rigs, each with enough compressor behind it to keep the bit cutting instead of standing. Air, more than horsepower, decides how many metres a machine puts down between first light and shift change.

Any rock on the sheet
Weathered sandstone at one end of the range, tight granite at the other. Bit, feed pressure and honest metres per hour all shift with the formation, and we quote the number for your rock rather than the best number we have ever recorded.

Pattern held
Depth taken with a tape before the rig comes off the collar, inclination read off an instrument rather than judged by eye, and both written down. A hole nobody verified is a hole the shotfirer discovers at the worst possible moment.

Drilling that is not for blasting
Probe holes ahead of a face, dewatering holes, holes put down for site investigation. A small share of our metres, drilled by the same rigs and the same crews.

01Do you drill for other contractors' blasting crews?
We do, and drilling is priced as a standalone item where the explosive side is already covered by somebody else's licence. Our preference is to hold both. When the hole and the charge sit with one firm, there is nobody left to argue with about which of the two produced the oversize.
02How much can you drill in a day?
Rock and hole diameter decide it, so a metre rate quoted before anyone has walked the face is a guess with a decimal point on it. In the sandstone and softer basalt around Bundelkhand and Madhya Pradesh, a rig holds its rate for the whole shift. Move the same rig into hard Karnataka granite and the figure drops a long way.

Shotfirers who hold licences, a design worked out for the bench actually standing there, and a vibration reading filed for every round fired. Rock broken, nothing else.
Mining Operations
Bare ground to a working face: overburden off, benches cut, rock down and moving. Twenty excavators, and crews who have opened a face before rather than read about it.
