Seven products between those two. What you order depends on the layer going down, so this page is written for whoever writes the specification rather than whoever raises the order.
Sub-grade first, GSB over it, WMM over that, bituminous work on top. Every layer calls for a different grading, and all of it comes off the same three-stage plant with the decks changed. That is why one order can cover four layers instead of four suppliers.
Crushed stone graded to spread wheel load into the sub-grade and let water leave the pavement instead of standing in it. Gradation decides the rest. Heavy on fines and the layer holds water; short on them and no amount of rolling brings it to density.
Aggregate brought to optimum moisture in the pugmill, laid over GSB, rolled hard, then sealed under DBM. It carries the traffic. It is also the first layer to tell you, through the surface, that something went wrong two courses down.
Single-size coarse stone off the secondary screen. Specified where voids and bulk matter and finish does not, and it forms the coarse skeleton of dry lean concrete beneath a rigid slab.
Our highest-volume size by a distance: dense bituminous macadam, structural concrete, precast yards. Size alone will not pass it. A cone run at the wrong closed side setting throws flaky stone, and it is the flakiness index that catches that, never the sieve stack.
The small end of the coarse fraction. Used in the bituminous concrete wearing course, and in concrete where the section is thin or the steel too congested for anything larger.
We screen the fines and sell them rather than let them build up behind the plant. Washed and graded, and where the specification permits the substitution, this stone stands in for river sand in concrete and block work. River sand gets scarcer and dearer every season. This does not.
Blasted rock, sorted for size but never crushed. It leaves as-raised for pitching and retaining work, or goes to other operators' plants as hopper feed.
Ask even if your grading is not on this list. The plants are three-stage with adjustable decks, so an odd band is usually a deck change rather than a new supplier. Flakiness index is the one thing we will not promise blind: it follows the rock at the face, so we test first and tell you what came back.
