Earthwork gets paid by the cubic metre. It gets accepted by the millimetre.
Stand on a formation running 40mm high and it looks entirely acceptable. It is not, and correcting it later burns material worth a whole bituminous layer out of somebody's budget. Compaction is the worse of the two, because short density looks exactly like correct density until a field density test says otherwise three weeks later, and by then the layer above is already down on top of it.
Excavators, graders and rollers on cut, fill, sub-grade and compaction, worked to the issued cross-section. We set the job out on the assumption that the consultant will test it, because the consultant will.
What we bring to the site

Clearing and grubbing
Scrub, root systems, topsoil and whatever else is sitting in the alignment. Stripped, then stockpiled for reuse or carted off site, whichever way the contract reads.
- 02
Cut and embankment
Roadway excavation, and fill placed in controlled layers to the grade and cross-section on the drawing. Not end-tipped in a heap and rolled once so it looks right from the road.

Sub-grade and compaction
Trimmed to level, watered to optimum moisture content, then rolled until the field density says the layer is finished. The graders and rollers are ours, so a wet fortnight does not send them back to a hire yard.

Haul roads
The roads inside the quarry that everything else depends on. Build one properly and it pays for itself inside a month in tipper tyres alone, before anybody counts the cycle times. Every contractor in the trade knows this. Very few sites do anything about it.
Earthwork questions
01Do you work under the client's consultant?
We do. Levels, layer thickness and density go to whoever the contract nominates, and the work is built to survive the test rather than to photograph well on handover day.
02Can you do earthwork without the mining and crushing?
Yes. In practice most of our earthwork runs alongside a crusher on the same package, but where it stands on its own it is scoped and rated on its own.
